“COOL THE SCHOOL”
Monsignor Robert A. Armstrong and Sr. Josephann Wagoner, SSND
are pleased to announce that with the help of our Cathedral
community, $5.3 million in pledges have been raised during the
recent Capital Campaign for the needs of the school and the church.
They are grateful to have the support of those individuals who
contributed their time, talent, and treasure to fulfill these vital
needs. The restoration and refurbishing of the two Cathedral pipe
organs has been completed. The masonry work on the two Cathedral
towers is complete and work is in progress on the stained glass
windows.
The Heating and Ventilation System has been installed throughout
the school and work is in its final stages. This installation
ensures that our school is a better steward of our environment. The
school is now more energy-efficient which will improve air quality
for students and staff, and provide the climate and ventilation
controls necessary to safeguard the ever-expanding technology in the
computer lab and the classrooms.
Due to the dedication of the parish and school community working
together to achieve a common goal, our campaign was an incredible
success. The community has provided a way for the students to
continue to meet academic challenges and grow spiritually in an
environment more conducive to learning. The completion of this
project will support the School of the Cathedral in continuing its
legacy of educational excellence as a premier school in the
Archdiocese of Baltimore. |

Class of 2007
gifts “Mustang” mural to the school!
The school’s newly elected sports mascot, the Cathedral Mustang, is
now sketched and painted proudly on the rear wall of the gymnasium,
courtesy of the Class of 2007. With its bold green and gold colors,
this mural pays tribute to the true spirit of the School of the
Cathedral. The mural compliments the padded stadium chairs with the
Mustang theme, given by the class of 2006. The school community
thanks Will Cole for
his dedication and craftsmanship in completing this mural.
Eddies
Market features the Cathedral Mustang Sandwich
Don’t forget! Eddies
Market at Charles Street and Roland Avenue locations now offer our
school’s signature sandwich, “The Cathedral Mustang.”

Our alumnae experience new cultures abroad…
Jessica Ayd,
Class of 1998
Peace Corps., Fiji
Jessica Ayd ’98 is currently a
volunteer with the Peace Corps in Fiji. For the past year she has
been teaching computers and health at the largest secondary school
in the country. Though she says teaching in Fiji is definitely
challenging, it is also one of the most rewarding experiences she
has had to date. She feels fortunate to have
been assigned to a country as beautiful as Fiji, but assures
everyone back home that she doesn't get to the beach that often.
Aside from the beautiful setting, the Fijian people are extremely
generous and hospitable. It took a while to adjust to the slow pace
of the South Pacific lifestyle, but Jessica is learning to live in
“Fiji time.” She encourages students to look into volunteer
opportunities at home or abroad.
Elizabeth Knight ’95
shares her experience as a teacher abroad in the Peace Corps…
“In short, I was a secondary school English
teacher in Severodonetsk, Lugansk Oblast, Ukraine (Eastern Ukraine)
from 2003 to 2005. It was an absolutely amazing experience for me as
I walked away with a wealth of new skills but more importantly, a
profound new understanding of the commonality amongst people which
crosses cultural, linguistic, ethnic, and religious divides. We are
all far more the same in our daily routines not to mention, our
hopes and dreams! I am pretty sure that I learned 100 times more
than I was able to teach my students, but being able to engage with
them and 5 days a week to conduct conversational English classes was
a joy, though not an easy one. The Peace Corps was a challenge that
pushed me to my very limits but one I am forever grateful for. I was
fortunate to make lifelong friends, connections which
I will never lose with families
in Ukraine. I continue to return to Severodonetsk whenever the
opportunity presents because, truthfully, thank you is never going
to be enough, I need to do and say more to demonstrate my gratitude
to the families, colleagues, and students that have changed my life.
To date, I have been able to pursue my newfound interest in Ukraine
in my professional career and hope to continue to do so for years to
come.” Elizabeth recommends others try this wonderful teaching
abroad experience.

Greetings
from the Office of Institutional Advancement!
The Office of Institutional
Advancement celebrates its
16th anniversary this year,
as it was established in 1991 to provide a vehicle for development
and future planning. The goal of this office is to develop a
"meaningful involvement" of people in our school's mission
and vision for the future, which is to nurture and challenge our
students in every way.
Our office publishes The Report Card, which is the school/alumni newsletter,
3 times a year. We handle any alumni activities and reunions.
We held our 2005 Alumni All Class Reunion Bull & Oyster Roast
on October 8, 2005. Over 480 Cathedral alumni, parents, and friends
enjoyed the evening. Our next All Class reunion will be in the year
2010.
Our most recent golf outing better known as the
Cathedral Open was held on September
17, 2007 at
Chestnut Ridge Country Club. Thanks go out to Mike Warner, John Boote,
and Tony Unitas, our chairpersons, for hosting this event.
Each fall we have an Annual Fund
Campaign for
our school. The funds generated directly help
our present school students in many ways. We are pleased to
share that last years' campaign surpassed our goal due to the hard
work of parent, alumni and student volunteers! Contact the
Office of Institutional
Advancement if
you would like to contribute.
It is your help and involvement that enables the School of the
Cathedral to thrive and uphold its high standard of education for
young students of today and tomorrow. I hope you enjoy our
website and encourage you to contact us if you have any questions!
Warm Regards,
Mary Suarez-Murias Miller '73
Director of Institutional Advancement
